Beyond Bled: Europe's Most Elegant Getaway, Slovenia

There are some countries; when you hear their names, a single image appears in your mind. When Slovenia is mentioned, most people first think of Lake Bled, which decorates postcards with its church rising in the middle of a small island.

Yet, seeing Slovenia as consisting only of Bled is like judging a novel solely by its cover.

Stretching from the foothills of the Alps to the Adriatic coast, this small country hides perhaps one of Europe's most elegant surprises. With journeys of just a few hours, you can reach emerald-colored rivers, historic cities, shepherd highlands, cave castles, quiet lakes, and stone streets on the Adriatic coast. Moreover, you experience this within a calm and refined atmosphere, without stepping into the shadow of massive crowds.

Imagine walking along the shores of Lake Bled in the early hours of the morning. The fog has not completely dispersed yet. The sound of oars echoes across the surface of the lake. Reached via a journey of approximately half an hour, Lake Bohinj represents the quieter, more natural, and more introverted face of the country. Located inside the Triglav National Park, this lake offers a wilder and untouched beauty, quite different from the elegant postcard effect of Bled.

Here, taking in the scenery is not a passive experience. You can hike around the lake, head out onto the water with a canoe or paddleboard, trek towards Savica Waterfall, or head up to Vogel to take in the vast panorama of the Julian Alps.

As you move towards the west of Slovenia, the road leads you to one of Europe's most impressive natural areas: the Soča Valley.

That turquoise water, which gives the impression of a filter being used in photographs, possesses the exact same vibrancy in reality.
